More about Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition typically affecting a limb after an injury or surgical procedure. It is characterized by prolonged or excessive pain and changes in skin color, temperature, and swelling in the affected area. The pain experienced is often out of proportion to the initial injury and can be severe, persistent, and debilitating. CRPS is divided into two types: Type I, formerly known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), occurs without a direct nerve injury, while Type II, previously referred to as Causalgia, involves a confirmed nerve injury. The exact cause of CRPS is not fully understood, but it is thought to involve abnormal responses in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes, and treatment options may include physical therapy, medications, nerve blocks, and psychological support. The condition can lead to significant physical and emotional challenges, making a multidisciplinary approach to management essential.
