More about Shingles
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. This condition is characterized by a painful rash that typically appears as a stripe of blisters on one side of the body or face. Prior to the rash, individuals may experience itching, tingling, or intense pain in the affected area. While the rash itself usually heals within 2 to 4 weeks, the pain associated with shingles, known as postherpetic neuralgia, can persist for months or even years in some cases. Shingles primarily affects older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems. Vaccination is available to reduce the risk of developing shingles. Treatment often involves antiviral medications, pain relief measures, and, in some cases, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to minimize complications and manage symptoms effectively.
